What is RansomCloud?

RansomCloud is a new form of ransomware that cybercriminals use to hack and encrypt email accounts stored in the Cloud. Through phishing emails, online users are tricked into granting cybercriminals access into the users’ email accounts. The encrypted data can then be held for ransom or used for other malicious means.

How can companies stay protected from RansomCloud?

Beware of the following red flags:

Links – Avoid clicking links in emails that appear suspicious. Try copy and pasting that link into your browser first to check if the link is legitimate.

Requests for permission – Cybercriminals use deception and social engineering tricks to gain access into user accounts. Be skeptical of permission requests that pop up in email applications.

Typos – Emails from reputable companies such as Microsoft or Apple should not contain any typos. Typos are usually a blaring signal that the email is fake.
Multi-level authentication can further safeguard email accounts from RansomCloud attacks as well.

In 2017, ransomware victims increased by 250 percent, and that percentage continues to rise. Therefore, taking all precautions is a company’s best bet in decreasing vulnerability to these attacks.
