Many companies and organizations with an online presence have implemented two-factor authentication for account log-ins. For example, web services such as Amazon  and Gmail suggest using a code verification along with a password.

Here are 3 reasons why two-factor authentication (2FA) is useful:

1) Additional security

One could easily guess that 2FA adds an extra layer of security. Though hackers have found ways around 2FA using phishing attacks, malware, and credit card readers, some form of 2FA is better than no 2FA.

2) User-centered

The information required for two-factor authentications all come from the user, thus ensuring identity. 2FA comes in three categories:

• What you know (password, PIN, touch pattern)

• What you have (credit card, phone, computer)

• What you are (fingerprint, voice/face recognition)

3) Protection across devices

Two-factor authentication can be required when using all devices, from computers to cell phones to TVs. That way, cybercriminals will have a harder time accessing sensitive data or information.

Companies that require clients or users to log into online accounts should consider two-factor authentication.

Amazon, Google, and Apple all use 2FA, but small- to medium-sized businesses can benefit from 2FA also. With today’s ever-increasing online fraud and cyberattacks, two-factor authentication can protect a business and its online accounts from many threats.
